North Adams Public Library

North Adams, MA

Constructed at the end of the Civil War in 1865 as the Blackington Mansion and later converted to the City’s Library the building was out of space in the mid 1990’s. Ken Best designed a three-level addition that accommodates the library’s needs for the next twenty years, and also includes future expansion space. Work also included extensive exterior restoration for the brownstone and wood trim, as well as interior plastered surfaces. The project received a grant from the Massachusetts Historical Commission.

Both the interior and exterior received a face-lift. The building has been brought up to all building and safety codes in terms of the infrastructure, heating, security, electrical, etc. The completed North Adams Public Library has built-in expansion on the lower level which will enable it to meet the needs of the community well into the future.

The building incorporates a geothermal heating and cooling system, and photovoltaic panels for a more efficient and renewable energy source. These features plus the use of sustainable materials and finishes brought the library towards its goal of becoming a LEED certified building. The project was completed in 2005.
